Bill Gates and FC Barcelona President Sandro Rosell and Manager Josep Guardiola announced the three-year partnership Thursday in Washington, D.C.
Polio has mostly been wiped out, but continues to be transmitted in Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The first year of the partnership will focus eradicating the disease.
The Gates Foundation has the financial resources and Barcelona has the fans, including 18 million on Facebook and millions of followers in several Twitter channels.
The team will use social media as well as stadium ads and announcements during games to further the campaign"
